Recent statistics have shown that around 76% of domestic burglaries are made via a door, with a forced lock and an unlocked door being the top two most common methods of door entry.

It is therefore vital that door locks to the highest possible standard are always specified and these remained locked at all times to prevent impulse burglaries where thieves discover open or unlocked doors on their travels.
You should also check on your wooden doors that the nightlatch is working properly and that a 5 lever mortice lock, approved to standard BS3621 is fitted. If a 3 lever is fitted you will need to upgrade to a 5 lever. This may also ensure you comply with your insurance requirements.
Homeowners should also change the locks as soon as possible after moving into a new home and then again every five years for added peace of mind.

Despite any assurances from previous owners you really do not know who may have got keys to your house in the past – its simply not worth the risk.
This is especially true in rented properties where you should encourage the landlord to change locks regularly.
