Rim locks or rim latches
Insurance approved rim locks contain auto dead locking cylinder night latches are commonly referred to as Yale locks operate in such a way so that when the door closes the lock will engage the dead lock and the door is secure. It requires a key to re-enter which means the night latch is secure against potential sliding attacks on the mechanism by intruders.
Rim locks or rim latches are often used where the door is not thick enough to take an internal mechanism or alternatively for decorative effect. The latch part of the rim lock catches into a keeper which is mounted on to the frame of the door.
An auto deadlocking escape night latch should have the British Standard kite mark (BS3621:2007) on it.
A rim lock usually comes with a back set of either 40 or 60mm, some rim locks do not meet the requirements of the current British Standard if used alone but if used together with a dead lock which does comply with British Standard it is acceptable.
