Mortice locks
Mortice type locks fitted on wooden external doors should be (British Standard BS3621) recommended by insurance firms. Upvc, aluminium or composite doors will need another specific type of locking mechanism to comply with standard insurance regulations.
They can also often be described as deadlocks or sash locks. A deadlock is a lock with just a keyhole and bolt, a sash lock has a bolt and latch and a pair of handles.
One of the reasons they are so essential is that they are difficult to force open as most of the lock mechanism is secured within the door frame.
Mortice locks are available in either 2.5″ or 3″ this is measured from the face plate to keyhole. The way to identify a British Standard lock is to look at the face plate – it should have a British Standard kite mark clearly visible.
Remember all locks should be changed if you lose your keys or move into a new home.
