British Standard (BS3621) was originally introduced in 1963 to meet demands from the association of burglary insurance surveyors as a means of assessing the security value of locks. Locks which have been tested and approved to BS 3621 1980 standard also carry the British standard kite mark. This is one of the most recognised and trusted symbols of safety and quality. BS3621 1980 has been developed to establish the minimum level of performance necessary for a lock required to withstand violent and surreptitious attack.
Yale type locks
The Yale type lock has several spring-loaded pin tumblers, each in 2 parts set in line with the key. Not all Yale locks conform to British Standards, so you should make sure you have the correct type fitted.
Sash locks and deadlocks
Sash locks and deadlocks are fitted into the mortise cut into the door and should be British Standard on external doors to comply with your insurance requirements.
As a rule, if you have more than one lock on an external door, only one must be up to British Standard. To be covered by your insurance policy it must be in operation, to find you are not covered when something unthinkable happens can cause a great deal of distress.
