There have been many reports recently in the media about the ability for intruders to gain access through UPVC doors.
Burglars have found a weakness in the centre of the lock cylinder and are able to snap the entire cylinder in two in a matter of seconds. This method seems to be spreading across the country, we will obviously not go into detail just how this is done to avoid copycat activities but we shall say that no specialist tools are needed.
The type of lock found in the majority of pvcu and upvc doors is called a Euro cylinder lock. Unfortunately these types of lock have been found to have a design fault. The design fault is a weakness in the centre of the cylinder. This weakness provides an opportunity for burglars to ‘snap’ the cylinder without difficulty which renders the lock ineffective. The intruders are then able to gain access by bypassing the UPvc door lock in as little as 20 seconds.
Lock manufacturers have worked hard to find a solution and have now produced an alternative. These are known as ‘Break Secure’ or Snap Safe ranges.
