Helping hotel with lost key

Our first job today consisted of opening a door for a large hotel chain and changing the lock as the customer had inadvertently taken the key with them.

This unfortunately is not an uncommon occurence and we work with a number of hotels and other retailers with multiple branches to maintain access.

Would you recognise a mortice lock?

What is a mortice lock? Many people would not be able to identify what type of lock they had in their door, relying instead on previous owners of the property, landlords etc. to have ensured the correct most affective lock has been installed.

This is not surprising as, if you have not been trained or are not interested in the variations of locks available then these things might pass you by! However you do need to know what type of lock you have if you want to be fully secure and covered by your home insurance company.

Many UK homeowners do not realise that failing to include locks which meet British Standards can invalidate an insurance policy. Insurance companies will ask for details about types of locking systems on all external doors and all downstairs windows.

Do you know what type of lock you have? Have you just assumed the previous owners of your home will have known? Perhaps the locks installed at the time have never been updated to comply with the updated standards?
