There are a number of reasons why locks break, sheer wear and tear is one of the most common reasons. Cylinders
The cylinder is found in the centre of a lock where the key enters, on a Yale lock for instance. This may have become loose, so the core slides out of place when trying to retrieve the key, or it may have become stuck so the key does not rotate at all or does not return to its original position.
When the cylinder ceases to work, so does the lock which causes the potential problem of gaining entry.

These types of lock can cease to work for a number of reasons including worn keys, broken mechanisms and warped or ill-fitting doors.
